Adaptive haptic rendering for time-varying haptic and video frame rates in multi-modal interactions

چکیده
In multi-modal interactions including haptics, problems such as input sensor noise, temporal mismatch between graphics and haptics, and non-constant refresh rates may cause non-smooth force/torque display. This paper proposes temporal smoothing technique for haptic interaction using a sensing glove inmulti-modal applications. The proposed technique employs two processes: (1) a noise reduction method is applied to reduce jitter noise at the sensors in the sensing glove and (2) an adaptive force extrapolation is applied for timevarying haptic and video frame rates. To demonstrate the performance of the proposed method, we developed a test platform to assess a simple box model and relatively complex models such as gamephone, portable media player (PMP). It was subsequently demonstrated that the proposed method can support smooth haptic interactions in multi-modal applications where a haptic device and a sensing glove are used. Real-Time Synchronised 3D-Perceptualisation
The aim is to support application users to inspect the results of software that simulates complex, time-variant physical phenomena in the natural and engineering sciences. The objective is to ’perceptualise’ the Gigabytes of data by means of visual and haptic 3D animations. The quality of the animations depends, among other aspects, on the reliable synchronisation of the animation frames, indep...
متن کاملA GPU-Based Approach for Real-Time Haptic Rendering of 3D Fluids
Real-time haptic rendering of three-dimensional fluid flow will improve the interactivity and realism of video games and surgical simulators, but it remains a challenging undertaking due to its high computational cost. In this work we propose an innovative GPUbased approach that enables real-time haptic rendering of highresolution 3D Navier-Stokes fluids. We show that moving the vast majority o...
متن کاملReal-time Adaptive Prediction Method for Smooth Haptic Rendering
In this paper, we propose a real-time adaptive prediction method to calculate smooth and accurate haptic feedback in complex scenarios. Smooth haptic feedback is an important task for haptic rendering with complex virtual objects. However, commonly the update rate of the haptic rendering may drop down during multi-point contact in complex scenarios because high computational cost is required fo...
متن کاملAccurate and adaptive contact modeling for multi-rate multi-point haptic rendering of static and deformable environments
Common approaches for the haptic rendering of complex scenarios employ multi-rate simulation schemes. Here, the collision queries or the simulation of a complex deformable object are often performed asynchronously at a lower frequency, while some kind of intermediate contact representation is used to simulate interactions at the haptic rate. However, this can produce artifacts in the haptic ren...
متن کاملHaptic and visual rendering for multi-modal exploration of molecular information
The paper presents a system for the multi-modal rendering of molecules. Chemists typically deal with phenomena that are not directly experienceable and usually described by huge amount of data awkward to understand directly. Software tools have been introduced to support data interpretation, without a high degree of interactivity and explorability of the data. This work goes beyond the classica...
